A Bird's Eye View of the Sawtooths: Alpine Lakes Report #1

Thinking about a hike in the Sawtooths and need help deciding whether you should pack the snowshoes or the fishing pole?  Check here first to find out the latest conditions on some of our most popular alpine lakes.  A huge thank you to Dr. Jeff Welker and CJ Sherlock for creating this opportunity, we are excited to bring you the first in a series that we will be updating as weather permits throughout the early hiking season!  As with any backcountry travel please remember conditions can change rapidly so plan accordingly especially when traveling in icy and snow covered terrain.  Stop by and see us at the Visitor's Center when you get to Stanley for help planning your day hike, multi-day backpacking trip, or even the best place to grab a burger when you get back!

Alpine Lakes Report #1: May 4th, 2018

The biggest and easily the most popular, Redfish Lake is melting fast!  Just in time for the Redfish Lake Lodge Memorial Run

Stanley Lake won't be far behind either! As you can see in the photos very little snow left in the camp areas around the lakes.

Bench Lakes above. Marshall Lake below.

For the more adventurous hikers, the Bench Lakes and Marshall Lake are still holding snow but ice is melting around the edges.

Once the lakes start melting it doesn't take long for the ice to go, so follow along to see how the lakes are progressing.  Which lakes would you like to see on our next report?  Before you know it the fish will be jumping, the perfect place to cool off during those warm summer days!
